Controls Project Engineer

General Description

  • This position requires a high level of collaboration and teamwork with individuals and groups both internal and external to ACRO (i.e. – controls engineering manager, controls engineering, project management, mechanical engineering, application engineering, sales, assembly, service, purchasing, shipping/receiving, human resources, outside equipment builders, outside engineering firms, vendors/suppliers, and customers)
  • Systems may include programmable logic controllers (PLC), human machine interface (HMI), safety controllers, robots, servos, distributed I/O, welders, variable frequency drives, vision systems, material handling, conveyors, spraying, dispensing, industrial networks, instrumentation, pneumatics, hydraulics, and electro-mechanical control devices 
  • Responsible for the control system performance and profitability of the related technical aspects of assigned projects (i.e. – electrical, safety, pneumatics, hydraulics, water, welding, lubrication, and programming) 
  • Engage in progress review and planning meetings with the controls engineering manager, project manager, mechanical engineers, assembly, and service personnel during the design, build, start-up, commissioning, and warranty periods of the project 
  • Identify potential risk areas, long-lead items, and/or financial impacts early in the project to provide proactive or alternative solutions 
  • Perform and champion controls related engineering tasks (i.e. – conceptualization, risk assessment, design, generation of schematics, component specification, safety evaluation, purchasing support, programming, assembly support, de-bug, safety validation, and field commissioning) 
  • Coordinate efforts with vendors, suppliers, outside engineering firms, and contract engineers for assigned projects 
  • Provide leadership, guidance, assistance, technical mentoring, and hands-on support to a team of internal/external controls engineers and assembly, and service staff
  • Employ continuous improvement methodologies of controls designs and programming standards within a team environment

work experience requirements

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of custom automated equipment controls design, program, debug, troubleshooting, and support experience (direct experience with assembly equipment preferred, as it relates to manufacturing and factory floor automation)
  • Strong CAD skills related to controls schematics generation (AutoCAD required; AutoCAD Electrical or E-Plan is a plus)
  • Control system design experience
    • Electrical – Strong experience required (component specification, component sizing, power distribution, load calculations, SCCR calculations, safety circuitry, panel layouts, heat calculations, local/distributed I/O, sensors, variable frequence drives, servos, system interfacing, industrial networks (Ethernet, Ethernet/IP, CIP Safety, ProfiNet, PROFIsafe, IO-Link), etc.…)
    • Pneumatic – Some experience required (component specification, component sizing, air prep system, safe exhaust, directional control valves, flow controls, pressure regulation, check valves, etc….)
    • Hydraulic – Working knowledge is a plus
    • Welding Systems – Working knowledge is a plus (MIG, TIG, laser, resistance, plasma)
    • Lubrication Systems – Working knowledge is a plus
    • Safety System – Some experience required (safe distance calculations, safety categories, performance levels, risk assessment, safety circuit evaluation (SISTEMA), safety system validation)
    • Robotics – Working knowledge is a plus
    • Peripherals – Working knowledge is a plus (RFID, laser etching, pin stampers, vision systems, barcode readers, serial interfaces, laser measurement, leak testers, etc….)
  • Programming and commissioning experience
    • Programable Logic Controller (PLC) – Strong experience required (Allen-Bradley preferred; Siemens is a plus)
    • Human Machine Interface (HMI) – Strong experience required (Allen-Bradley preferred; Siemens is a plus)
    • Programable Safety – Some experience required (Allen-Bradley preferred; Siemens is a plus)
    • Industrial Networks – Strong experience required (Ethernet, Ethernet/IP, CIP preferred; ProfiNet or PROFIsafe is a plus)
    • Servos – Some experience required (Allen-Bradley preferred; Siemens is a plus)
    • Variable Frequence Drives (VFD) – Some experience required (Allen-Bradley preferred; Siemens is a plus)
    • Robotics Interface – Some experience required (Fanuc or Yaskawa/Motoman preferred; ABB or Kuka is a plus)
    • Machine Vision – Working knowledge is a plus (Keyence, Cognex, DataLogic, and/or IR Vision preferred)
    • SCADA/MES System – Working knowledge is a plus
    • Peripherals – Some experience required (RFID, laser marking, pin stampers, barcode readers, serial interfaces, measurement systems, leak testers, etc….)
  • Programming Languages – Strong experience required (Ladder logic preferred; structured text, function block, sequential function chart, graph, visual basic, statement list, or Python is a plus)
  • Microsoft Office product experience required (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, etc….)
  • Database experience is a plus (Excel, Access, SQL, etc….)
  • Must possess cross functional communication skills (professional demeanor, cooperative personality, organizational skills, multitasking capabilities, team-oriented, etc.…)
  • Direct experience working with customers and suppliers is required
  • Familiar with current and emerging technologies
  • Experience providing designs that comply with industry-accepted standards and engineering practices
  • Proven experience managing project budgets and meeting project milestones is required
  • Experience as lead controls engineer, coordinating the efforts of multiple engineers for a given project is required
  • Ability to adapt to project related design practices and programming standards

education requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or similar degree preferred, however related experience may be considered
